E. M. Forster’s The Machine Stops reminds us of literary utopia’s shadowdystopia, which flourished in 20th century. Different from other works by Forster, this novella is the antiattack upon the optimism about taking technological development as positive means in solving social problems. Despite the augmentation of the importance, it has not recEived enough attention. This article is to place the work in its historical and intellectual context, interpret the antiintellectual mythos in Forster as a dystopist through the illusory world under his pen, and reveal the themes and connotations, i.e. the extricable perplexity of a liberalhumanistthe fear and anxiety towards development of science and technology beyond control. Forster’s The Machine Stops reveals a lot of ethical and social problems during men’s pursuing process of science which makes us meditate.
